Bonding, Grief, and Loss - How To Create a Home Where Children Feel Safe Discussing Adoption

Description: This session will address the issues of grief and loss experienced by an adopted child. Methods on transitioning the adopted child into bonding with the family will be discussed. Emotional issues adopted children deal with will be discussed along with methods addressing the fulfillment of the attachment process.

Learning Objectives:
1. Session attendees will be able to identify and describe emotional issues experienced by adopted children.
2. Session attendees will be able to describe a home environment where the adopted child feels safe.
3. Session attendees will be able to describe methods that will help adopted children resolve issues of grief and loss.
4. Session attendees will be able to describe methods of talking with children about being adopted and their lives prior to adoption.
5. Session attendees will be able to demonstrate how to facilitate discussion about birth parents, even when birth parents are unknown.

Intended Audience: Mental and behavioral professionals; adoptive parents

Intended Audience Level: This session is intended for beginning to intermediate level professionals.
